Buying, bidding and selling at horse auctions

How does a horse auction work?

Every horse auction starts with a catalogue. The auction house selects the horses and publishes photographs, videos, breeding and usually a veterinary report with x-rays for each lot, along with the moment bidding opens and closes. To take part you register with the auction house beforehand; most ask for identification and some for a payment guarantee. You then bid inside the window they have set. At an online horse auction the clock does the work: each bid lifts the price by a fixed increment, and a bid in the closing minutes normally extends that clock, so nobody is sniped on the line. The highest bid when the hammer falls is the hammer price. If it clears the vendor's reserve, the horse is sold. The auction house then invoices you for the hammer price plus its buyer's premium, and you arrange payment, insurance and transport from there.

Online, live or hybrid?

Sales come in three shapes. At an online horse auction the collection sits on the internet for days or weeks and you bid from your phone, judging the horses on video and at a viewing day. At a live sale you are at the ringside, the horses are shown in hand or ridden, and each lot is done in a couple of minutes. A hybrid sale runs both at once: the ring bids, and you join online or by telephone. For a buyer abroad, online and hybrid sales are often the only practical way into a foal auction or a studbook sale a few countries away. What you give up is seeing the horse move in front of you, so anyone bidding seriously books the viewing day, or sends someone who knows what to look at. The rules are the same in all three: catalogue, registration, reserve, and a premium on top.

Starting bid, reserve and buyer's premium

Three figures decide what an auction horse really costs you. The starting bid is the lowest amount bidding opens at, and it is the figure shown against each auction horse on PaardPlaats. The reserve is the minimum the vendor agreed with the auction house in advance. If the top bid stays under it, the vendor does not have to let the horse go; sometimes a private deal follows afterwards, often it does not. Reserves are rarely published. On top of the hammer price comes the buyer's premium: a percentage the auction house charges the buyer, usually with VAT on the premium and sometimes an administration fee as well. The percentage varies from house to house and is set out in the conditions of sale, so read them before you bid and do the sum. On a ten thousand pound hammer price with a ten per cent premium you owe eleven thousand before VAT, transport and the first month's livery.

Vetting, x-rays and what you can check before you bid

Most sport horse and premier sales come with a veterinary report. The auction house has the horses examined beforehand and publishes x-rays with the catalogue or in a password-protected area, so that your own vet can read them. Do have them read: a second pair of eyes on the same plates costs very little and heads off an expensive surprise. Many general and traditional sales publish no x-rays at all and sell the horse as seen. If something is unclear on a published set, ask whether further imaging is possible, an ultrasound of a tendon or a view of a joint that is not in the standard set. Some houses let you bring a vet to the viewing day, others do not. Check the window for reporting a defect once the horse is knocked down to you; it is in the conditions of sale and it is usually short. A full five-stage vetting at the point of purchase, as you would arrange on a private sale, is rarely on offer: you are buying on what, if anything, was published beforehand.

Bidding well at a horse auction

Set your ceiling before the clock starts, and work backwards. Begin with what the horse is worth to you, take off the buyer's premium, the VAT, the transport and the first few months' livery, and what is left is the highest bid you are allowed to make. Write it down. The closing minutes of an online horse auction move quickly and one more bid always feels cheap; it rarely costs only that, because the premium climbs with it. Pick two or three horses rather than one, so you are not cornered on the lot everyone else has fallen for. Watch the early bidding to see how the market is reading the catalogue, but remember that bidding early draws attention to a horse. And when the bidding goes past your ceiling, let it go. There is another sale next month.

Buying a pony at auction

A pony auction runs exactly like a horse auction, but you are weighing different things. For a child's pony, temperament matters more than the movement: how the pony copes with a busy collecting ring, with a mounting block, with a clumsy hand on the rein. Ask for video of a child or a light rider on board rather than only the professional, and look hard at the height against the rider, because within a single breed a Welsh section B and a section C are different ponies and New Forests vary just as much. Studbook and breed society sales often put foals, youngstock and produced competition ponies in one catalogue, so be clear whether you are buying something that can go in the ring next week or a three-year project. Ponies with a real competition record cost more, and usually deserve to. And remember that a pony lives as long as a horse: you are buying for years, not for one season.

Foals, broodmares and studbook sales

Foal auctions are a summer fixture on the continent: from July into September the Dutch, Belgian and German studbooks and sale companies put the year's foals under the hammer, usually alongside a foal show or a grading. Most British buyers meet them online. What you are buying is breeding and expectation, not a riding horse. The foal normally stays with the mare until it is weaned and then goes out to be reared, so count those years in: grazing, farrier, vet, and the backing before you know what you have. Broodmares, mares in foal and embryos come under the hammer too, usually in separate sales where the damline counts for more than the animal walking past you. In a KWPN, Hanoverian or Holsteiner collection the family often tells you more about the price than the photograph does. Read the pedigree as carefully as you would a vet's report.

Is it safe? Spotting a reputable horse auction

An auction is no riskier than a private purchase, as long as you know what to look at. A sound auction house publishes full conditions of sale in advance: who the vendor is, what the buyer's premium adds, when payment falls due, when title and risk pass to you, and how long you have to report a defect. Many lots come with a veterinary report and any x-rays your own vet can read. Someone answers the telephone, there is a viewing day or at the very least generous video, and you can see your own bidding history in the system. What you do not want: a catalogue with no breeding, photographs plainly taken years ago, payment asked in advance to a private account, or pressure to do a deal outside the sale. If something does not sit right, ring the auction house and ask your questions before bidding opens, not after.

Selling a horse through an auction

For a vendor, a sale is a way of putting the horse in front of a lot of serious buyers in a short space of time. You enter it with an auction house that suits the type, and the house selects: not every entry makes the catalogue. If yours is taken, expect photography and video work and usually an entry fee; at sport horse and premier sales a clinical examination with x-rays is part of that too. You agree a reserve, the figure below which you need not sell, and a commission, a percentage of the hammer price the house keeps.
