American Paint Horse
Looking for an American Paint Horse for sale? The Paint is a western stock-horse breed built on Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred bloodlines, registered with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) and recognised by its pinto spotting pattern of white and a dark colour. It appeals to happy hackers who want a sensible all-rounder, to riding-club riders after something different, and to the growing western scene, where a coloured western horse with proper papers is always of interest. On Paardplaats you can browse the listings, compare age, training and paperwork, and contact sellers directly. Whatever the pattern, the aim is to buy the horse and not merely the markings.
When the American Quarter Horse Association was founded in 1940, its rules excluded horses with pinto patterns, as well as so-called crop-outs, Quarter Horse foals born with white body spots. On 16 February 1962 Rebecca Tyler Lockhart and a group of horsemen met in Gainesville, Texas, and founded the American Paint Stock Horse Association. Its first registered horse was Bandit's Pinto, and by the end of 1962 it had 250 horses. A second group, the American Paint Quarter Horse Association, began in West Texas at about the same time, and in 1965 the two merged into the APHA, based in Fort Worth, Texas.
Both parents must be registered with the APHA, the AQHA or The Jockey Club, and at least one must be a registered Paint. The Regular Registry requires a natural marking of minimum size or, under rules introduced in 2020, a pattern gene confirmed by an approved laboratory plus visible Paint traits. Offspring without a qualifying marking go into the Solid Paint-Bred registry. Affiliate clubs exist in several European countries, including Ireland, and EuroPaint in Kreuth, Bavaria, has been described as the largest APHA-approved show outside North America.
The most common pattern is tobiano, with rounded markings, white legs, white usually crossing the back and a mostly dark head. Overo markings are sharp, irregular and mostly horizontal, with dark legs, a white face and sometimes blue eyes. The APHA recognises three overo patterns, frame, sabino and splashed white, while tovero is a mix of tobiano and overo. Base colours are most often black, bay, brown or chestnut, with palomino, buckskin, dun and roan also seen. The build is pure stock horse, muscular and compact, usually about 1.45 to 1.60 m (14.2 to 15.3 hh), taller with more Thoroughbred blood. Choose on conformation and mind first and colour last. Skewbald and piebald describe a colour, not a breed, so a coloured cob is not a Paint.
Western pleasure, reining, trail, ranch riding, barrel racing and cutting are the classic disciplines, but they also turn up in show jumping and ordinary hacking. Their calm, willing, people-oriented nature makes a well-trained one a fine family or first horse. A young or green horse, however, still needs an experienced trainer. Give a youngster time: solid basics, plenty of quiet miles and no over-showing before the body has matured.
Stock-horse types often keep weight easily, so build the diet on forage, watch body condition and keep the horse working. Daily turnout with company suits mind and body. Have the farrier come at a regular rhythm, and have a saddle fitter check the saddle, since the back is short and broad. Pink skin under white markings, often on the muzzle and around the eyes, can sunburn, so use sun cream made for horses or a fly mask with UV protection in strong sun. Add routine dental and health care.
Ask for the APHA registration certificate and check that it can be transferred into your name. Check the passport and microchip. Request DNA parentage and the genetic panel covering GBED, HERDA, HYPP, MH and PSSM1; the APHA six-panel adds the lethal white overo test. A carrier of the frame gene is healthy, but a foal with two copies dies within days, so two carriers must never be bred together. Finish with a five-stage vetting with X-rays. The classic mistakes are paying Paint prices for an unregistered pinto, assuming every spotted stock horse is a Paint, buying on colour alone and over-horsing a novice with a youngster that needs a professional.
These are indicative asking prices from European and American listings in 2025 and 2026, converted at rounded rates that move over time. An unregistered pinto stock-horse type advertised as Paint type typically asks about £2,100 to £5,100 (€2,500 to €6,000). Foals and yearlings with APHA papers ask about £3,800 to £6,800 (€4,500 to €8,000), and unstarted or just-started horses of two to four years about £4,200 to £12,700 (€5,000 to €15,000). Most trained leisure and all-round horses are listed at £5,500 to £10,200 (€6,500 to €12,000), with about £6,400 (€7,500) typical. Western show horses with results and breeding stallions start at about £12,700 (€15,000), and top show horses often sell privately above £17,000 (€20,000). In the US many adult horses sell for $3,500 to $10,000 (about £2,600 to £7,600), and top show horses for $30,000 and more (about £22,700).
APHA papers, Regular or Solid status, training, show record, age, pedigree, conformation, soundness at vetting and test results all move the price. Flashy colour sells but should never outweigh quality. Importing adds cost: since Brexit, a horse from the EU needs an export health certificate, customs paperwork and import VAT, while one from the US adds flights and quarantine, often several thousand pounds in total.
Buyers range from happy hackers and riding-club members to western riders and breeders. State the APHA registration and whether the horse is Regular or Solid, give the pedigree, describe the colour pattern and quote any test results. Add training, show record and what the horse is like to handle and hack. Be honest about faults, since a straight description saves everyone time. Good photos showing the pattern from both sides, plus a short video, are worth the effort. Place your ad on Paardplaats.
What does an American Paint Horse cost?
Most trained leisure horses are advertised at about £5,500 to £10,200 (€6,500 to €12,000), while an unregistered pinto sold as Paint type often asks £2,100 to £5,100 (€2,500 to €6,000). Western show horses with results start at about £12,700 (€15,000). These are asking prices, not guarantees, and exchange rates move, so check the current rate before you commit.
What makes a horse a registered American Paint Horse?
Registration depends on the parentage. Both parents must be registered with the APHA, the AQHA or The Jockey Club, and at least one must be a Paint. A pinto of another breed, such as a skewbald cob, is therefore not a Paint, and a Quarter Horse is a separate breed with its own registry. A horse without qualifying markings can still be registered as Solid Paint-Bred.
Is a Paint Horse suitable for beginners and families?
Often, yes, if the individual horse is right. The breed is known for a calm, willing temperament, and a well-schooled, older horse can be an excellent first horse or family all-rounder for hacking, riding club and western work. A young or green one is different and needs an experienced trainer. Take your instructor along to the trial ride.
What should I check before buying or selling a Paint Horse?
Check the APHA certificate and its transfer into your name, the passport and microchip, DNA parentage and the genetic panel including the lethal white overo test. Then arrange a five-stage vetting with X-rays. Sellers should supply the same documents and describe the horse honestly, including its Regular or Solid status.
