Horse auctions: horses and ponies selling right now

PaardPlaats doesn't run auctions and doesn't take bids. What you get here are the horses and ponies cataloged by auction companies worldwide, with live start and closing times and the opening bid, so you can line them up side by side. You place your bid on the auction company's own site.

30 auction horses available

How this page works

Catalogs from every market

Horses and ponies out of auction company and breed registry catalogs, here and overseas, sit in one place. One list tells you what's selling right now, instead of a browser full of tabs and a handful of sale calendars.

Live timing and the opening bid

Every horse shows when bidding opens and closes, with a countdown running as you watch, and the figure bidding starts at. The current high bid always lives with the auction company.

Filter and compare

Narrow the auction listings by breed, discipline, gender, age, height, level, price and country. Set one sale's catalog next to another's, save what you like, and finish with a short list you'd actually bid on.

You bid at the sale

PaardPlaats takes no bids. From the listing you click through to the auction company's own page for that horse: you register there, bid there, and settle payment and shipping there.

Horse auctions: buying, bidding and selling

How a horse auction works

Every horse auction starts with a catalog. The auction company picks the horses and publishes photos, video, pedigree and, at sport horse sales, a veterinary report with radiographs, along with the time bidding opens and closes. To bid you register ahead of the sale; most companies want identification and some want a deposit or a credit reference. Then you bid inside the window. At an online horse auction the clock does the work: every bid raises the price by a set increment, and a bid in the last minutes usually extends the clock, so nobody gets sniped at the wire. The high bid when the hammer falls is the hammer price. If it clears the consignor's reserve, the horse sells. The auction company then invoices you, hammer price plus any buyer's premium, and you arrange payment, insurance and hauling from there.

Online, live or hybrid?

Sales come in three shapes. At an online horse auction the catalog sits open for days or weeks and you bid from your phone, judging the horses on video and at a preview. At a live sale you're in the stands or at the rail, horses are shown in hand or under saddle, and a lot goes through in a couple of minutes. Hybrid sales run both at once: the ring bids and you join online or by phone. For an American buyer, online and hybrid sales are usually the only practical way into a European foal auction or studbook sale. What you give up is watching the horse move in front of you, so anyone bidding seriously goes to the preview or sends someone local who knows what to look for. The rules are the same in all three: catalog, registration, reserve, and whatever the terms add on top.

Opening bid, reserve and buyer's premium

Three numbers decide what an auction horse actually costs. The opening bid is the lowest figure bidding starts at, and it's the number shown on each auction horse on PaardPlaats. The reserve is the minimum the consignor set with the auction company in advance; if the high bid stays under it, the horse doesn't have to sell, and reserves are rarely published. Then there's the buyer's premium, a percentage of the hammer price charged to the buyer on top. Premiums are standard at sport horse and premier sales, while plenty of traditional sales take their commission from the consignor instead and charge the buyer little or nothing. The terms and conditions say which, so read them before you bid. Budget sales tax too: whether it applies, and at what rate, depends on the state you buy in and where the horse is going.

Pre-purchase exams, radiographs and what you can check

What you can check before the hammer falls varies more here than it does in Europe. Sport horse and warmblood sales usually publish a veterinary report and a radiograph set with the catalog, often in a password-protected area, so your own vet can read them. Do that, because a second read on the same films is cheap insurance. At many traditional sales you get no films at all and the horse sells as is. Call the auction company and ask what's available: whether there's a preview, whether you can bring your own veterinarian, whether a pre-purchase exam can be arranged before bidding opens. Then read the announced conditions of sale for what's warranted and how long you have to raise it. On a sale horse that window is days, not weeks, and everything outside it is on you.

Bidding well at a horse auction

Set your ceiling before the clock starts, and work backward. Start with what the horse is worth to you, then subtract the buyer's premium, any sales tax, the hauling, and the first few months of board. What's left is the highest bid you're allowed to make. Write it down. The last minutes of an online horse auction move fast and one more bid always feels cheap, but it rarely costs only that, because the premium rides up with it. Pick two or three horses instead of one, so you aren't cornered on the horse everybody else fell for. Watch the early bidding to read the room, and remember that bidding early puts a spotlight on a horse. When it goes past your number, let it go. There's another sale.

Buying a pony at auction

A pony auction runs like any horse auction, but the math is different. For a kid's pony, disposition outranks movement every time: how the pony handles a loud warm-up pen, a mounting block, a rider who grabs. Ask for video of a child or a light rider on board, not just the trainer, and check height against the rider, because a 12.2-hand pony and a 14.2-hand pony are different jobs and the range inside Welsh or Pony of the Americas is wide. Breed association and studbook sales often mix weanlings, youngstock and finished show ponies in one catalog, so be clear whether you're buying something that can show next month or a three-year project. Ponies with a real show record cost more, and usually earn it. And a pony lives as long as a horse: you're buying for years, not a season.

Foals, broodmares and breeding stock sales

Foal auctions are a European summer fixture: from July into September the Dutch, Belgian and German studbooks and sale companies put the year's foals under the hammer, usually alongside a foal show or inspection. American buyers meet them online, and the shipping quote matters as much as the bid. What you're buying is pedigree and expectation, not a riding horse. The foal usually stays with the mare until weaning and then goes out to be raised, so count those years: pasture, farrier, vet and starting under saddle before you know what you have. Broodmares, mares in foal and embryos sell too, generally in separate sales where the female family counts for more than the animal in front of you. Production sales on the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred side work the same way, and in a KWPN, Hanoverian, AQHA or Arabian catalog the family usually explains the price better than the photo does.

Is it safe? Reading a sale before you bid

An auction is no riskier than a private sale once you know what to read. A solid auction company publishes its terms and conditions up front: who the consignor is, what the buyer's premium adds, when payment is due, when title and risk pass to you, what's warranted and how long you have to say something. Sport horse sales back that with a veterinary report and radiographs your vet can read. Somebody answers the phone, there's a preview or at minimum generous video, and your own bid history is visible in the system. What you don't want: a catalog with no pedigree, photos clearly years old, a wire transfer to a personal account, or pressure to deal outside the sale. Know too that a curated sport horse sale and a low-end loose horse auction are two different things, because the second comes with no vetting and little history. If something feels off, call before bidding opens, not after.

Selling a horse through an auction

For a consignor, a sale puts the horse in front of a lot of serious buyers in a short window. You enter with an auction company that fits the type, and the company selects, because not every entry makes the catalog. If yours is taken, expect a vet exam with radiographs at sport horse sales, photo and video work, and usually an entry fee. You agree on a reserve, the number below which you don't have to sell, and a commission, a percentage of the hammer price the company keeps. If the horse doesn't make its reserve it stays yours, though some companies still bill for the entry. Sales work best for horses with a clear story: strong pedigree, clean radiographs, a record that means something, or an obvious job. If you run a sale yourself, you can have your catalog published on PaardPlaats and send visitors straight to your own bidding page.

Why PaardPlaats is the best place to find auction horses

Search "horse auctions near me" and you land on one sale company's calendar, then another's, then a group somewhere on social media. Every company shows you its own catalog, and nobody's is complete. PaardPlaats pulls those catalogs into one list: auction horses from the United States and overseas, each with the start and closing time of the sale, a countdown running as you watch, and the opening bid. Over that sit the same filters as the rest of the marketplace: breed, discipline, gender, age, height, level, price, and country, whether you want to keep the haul short or you do not care where the horse stands. So a sport horse auction in Germany lands next to a dressage horse auction in the Netherlands instead of behind it. Listings show in every language PaardPlaats supports and prices in your own currency. What PaardPlaats doesn't do is run the sale or take the bids: for that you click through to the auction company.

Horse auctions: common questions

How does a horse auction work?

The auction company builds a catalog and publishes photos, video, pedigree and, at sport horse sales, a veterinary report with radiographs, along with when bidding opens and closes. You register ahead of the sale and bid inside that window. At an online horse auction every bid raises the price by a set increment and a late bid usually extends the clock. The high bid when the hammer falls is the hammer price; if it clears the consignor's reserve, the horse sells. The auction company then invoices the hammer price plus any buyer's premium, and payment, sales tax and hauling get settled with them.

Where can I find horse auctions near me and worldwide?

PaardPlaats puts the horses and ponies cataloged by auction companies and breed registries, here and overseas, into one list, with each sale's start and closing time and the opening bid alongside. Narrow it by country to keep the haul short, or open it up when the right horse is worth the trip. Looking for something specific, like a sport horse auction, a show jumping horse auction or a dressage horse auction? Filter by discipline, then by breed, gender, age, height, level and price. When you find the horse, click through to the auction company to bid.

Is it safe to buy a horse at auction?

Yes, if you do the homework a private purchase would get. Read the terms and conditions before you bid: who the consignor is, what the buyer's premium adds, when payment is due, when risk passes, what's warranted and how long you have to raise it. Where radiographs and a vet report are published, send them to your own veterinarian. Go to the preview or send somebody local who knows what they're looking at. Skip any sale with no pedigree, no history and no clear terms, or one that pushes you to deal outside it. The biggest risk at a sale isn't the horse, it's bidding past your number.

What are a reserve, an opening bid and a buyer's premium?

The opening bid is where bidding starts, and it's the figure shown on each auction horse on PaardPlaats. The reserve is the minimum the consignor set with the auction company beforehand; under it, the horse doesn't have to sell, and reserves are rarely published. A buyer's premium is a percentage of the hammer price charged to the buyer on top. It's standard at sport horse and premier sales, while plenty of traditional sales take their commission from the consignor instead. The terms say which. Build the premium and any sales tax into your ceiling, because the hammer price isn't what you pay.

Can I get a pre-purchase exam before I bid?

It depends on the sale. Sport horse and warmblood auctions have the horses examined in advance and publish radiographs, often in a password-protected area you can download from. Send those to your own veterinarian before bidding opens, because that's the pre-purchase exam you get at a sale. Many traditional sales publish nothing and sell as is. Call and ask whether there's a preview, whether you can bring your own vet, and whether an exam can be arranged. Then read the announced conditions for what's warranted and how long you have to raise it, which is usually days rather than weeks.

Can I buy a pony at auction?

Yes. Pony auctions and mixed breed association sales offer riding ponies, show ponies and weanlings, from Welsh and Pony of the Americas to the German riding pony. For a kid's pony, put disposition and mileage first: ask for video of a child or a light rider on board rather than the trainer only, and check height against the rider. Be clear whether you're buying a finished show pony or a youngster with years of work ahead. On PaardPlaats you can filter the auction listings by breed, height and age, so what's left actually fits the rider.

Does PaardPlaats handle the bidding?

No. PaardPlaats shows which horses and ponies are at auction and when each sale opens and closes, but the bidding happens at the auction company. PaardPlaats doesn't run auctions, doesn't take bids and isn't a party to the sale. From the listing you click through to the auction company's own page for that horse: you register there, see the live bid and place yours. The invoice, the buyer's premium, the payment and the hauling all run through the auction company under its own terms. What PaardPlaats does is make the catalogs of auction companies worldwide searchable, with sale timing and the opening bid alongside, so you can compare before you bid.

How do I sell a horse through an auction?

You enter the horse with an auction company that fits the type. The company selects, because not every entry makes the catalog. If yours is taken, expect a vet exam with radiographs at sport horse sales, photo and video work, and usually an entry fee. You agree on a reserve and a commission, a percentage of the hammer price the company keeps. If the horse doesn't make its reserve it stays yours. List it for sale on PaardPlaats at the same time so buyers can find it away from the sale. And if you run an auction yourself, you can have the whole catalog published on PaardPlaats and send visitors to your own bidding page.
